In a statement issued April 3, Suncor Energy reported it had "identified a release of hydrocarbon" on-site at the refinery on the evening of April 2.
“We immediately responded, identified the source of the release, and isolated it,” the company stated. “As a precautionary measure, response equipment, including booms and vacuum units, has been deployed and air monitoring in the vicinity is underway.”
In a follow-up statement sent at 10:10 a.m. on April 3, the company added, “We continue to actively manage the situation with response equipment, including booms and vacuum units, and air monitoring is ongoing in the area.”
The company has not specified the volume or type of hydrocarbon released in this latest incident, and it is not yet known whether the material left the site or entered the river.
The April 2 release follows an earlier incident on March 27, when crude oil — a specific type of hydrocarbon — was discharged from the same facility and entered the St. Clair River, prompting a “do not use water” advisory for residents who draw water directly from the St. Clair River. In that case, Suncor and Shell jointly responded with containment and cleanup efforts.
No public advisories have been issued in connection with the April 2 release.
