If you’re reading this, it means you care about local journalism.
Right now, The Sarnia Journal is at a turning point.
Since 2014, we’ve been Sarnia’s only independent news source—telling the stories of this city, holding power to account, and making sure the voices of this community aren’t drowned out by corporate media giants.
In August 2023, I bought The Sarnia Journal to keep it from disappearing. Since then, I’ve personally invested $100,000 to keep it alive, stepped away from my other businesses, and dedicated everything I have to making sure Sarnia still has a newsroom that isn’t controlled by shareholders in another city.
But independent journalism can’t survive on personal investment alone.
Across Canada, newspapers are shutting down. Google and Facebook have taken the advertising revenue that once kept local newsrooms running, and corporate chains have hollowed out the rest. The only newsrooms still standing are the ones where communities step up to sustain them.
That’s why we’re building something different:
A community-owned model where local journalism isn’t controlled by corporations or advertisers, but by the people who live here. Our long-term vision is to transition the Journal into a cooperative, where writers, journalists, and community-minded individuals have a stake in shaping the future of local news.
But to make that happen, we need your help.
If every person reading this contributed even a little, The Sarnia Journal could not only survive—it could thrive.
Every dollar we raise goes directly to paying local journalists, writers, and content creators to cover the stories that matter to Sarnia. Not algorithms. Not sensational headlines designed for clicks. But real, community-driven journalism.
