A 27-year-old Brampton man was arrested after officials discovered 52kg of suspected cocaine at the Blue Water Bridge earlier this month.

In a news release from the Canadian Border Services Agency, officials say a commercial truck entering Canada at the Blue Water Bridge port of entry in Point Edward on Dec. 4, 2023, was referred for a secondary examination.

“During the inspection of the trailer, border services officers discovered boxes containing 52 kg of suspected cocaine,” officials noted. “The CBSA arrested [the suspect] 27, of Brampton, Ontario, and seized the suspected narcotics.”

The RCMP took custody of the suspect and evidence; he was formally charged with: Importation of cocaine, contrary to Section 6(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and, Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The matter is currently before the Ontario Court of Justice, in Sarnia.

“Border services officers are committed to protecting our borders and ensuring the security of our communities,” said An Nguyen, Director, St.Clair District Operations, Canada Border Services Agency. “We work in partnership with the RCMP to prevent illegal activity at the border and to keep Canadians safe from illegal drugs.”

From January 1 to October 31, 2023, the CBSA in the Southern Ontario Region seized approximately 1,312 kg of narcotics.
