The Inn of the Good Shepherd’s Thanksgiving food drive has begun, just as its shelves are starting to look empty.
“We are entering into a very critical time of year for donations to our food bank,” said executive director Myles Vanni.
“The food collected now will have to see us through until Christmas.”
About 1,750 people use the Inn food bank each month and almost half are children. The soup kitchen serves another 110 meals a day on average, every day of the year.
The drive’s goal is ambitious - to collect 40,000 pounds of food.
To make donations easier, residents will find brown paper bags delivered by Sarnia Journal carriers in most of Sarnia, and by Canada Post in Bright’s Grove and Corunna.
Most needed are pasta sauce, canned pasta, lunchable items, cereal, canned fruit, canned meat, peanut butter, hygiene products (toilet paper, deodorant, razors, shampoo), and juice boxes.
Donations can be taken to most grocery stores, fire halls, The Good Shepherd’s Lodge at 950 Confederation, and The Inn at 115 John St. in Sarnia.
Acting now will address a serious community need, Vanni said.
