The City of Sarnia has launched an online permits and licensing portal as it moves to offer more services electronically. As of December 16, this online tool can be used to manage applications and renewals for business licenses and other planning applications.

“You can now go online, easily file applications, pay the related fees and track their status in one online space,” said Manager of Planning & Development Services, Eric Hyatt, “without the need to pick up the phone or inquire via email.”

Launching this portal is the first step, with plans underway to include other applications, requests, and processes such as building permits, development applications, and engineering permits to the portal. With this modernization, the City hopes to enhance customer experiences and streamline services.

“This is a huge milestone as we continue to modernize how we deliver and administer City services,” said Hyatt. “So far the majority of the Cityworks implementation has related to internal administration, with the launch of the portal representing the first significant public-facing use of the tool.”

Cityworks is a set of software tools designed specifically for public works, utilities, and other organizations faced with the challenge of managing capital assets and infrastructure.

The specific applications and renewals that can now be managed online include Planning Research Requests; Permitted Use and Zoning Letter Requests; Zoning and Building Compliance Certificate Requests; and Municipal Address Change Applications.

The online tool will help provide enhanced transparency and accessibility in the application process. It will also increase efficiency, with applications flowing directly to the responsible staff member and reducing instances of manual data entry and review
