As summer unfolds, the YMCA's day camps are once again buzzing with activity, providing children with a space to learn, play, and grow. This year, the YMCA is rallying the community with its annual “Fill the Bus” fundraiser, aiming to raise $20,000 to sponsor 100 local kids for a week of summer camp. This initiative underscores the YMCA's commitment to ensuring every child, regardless of financial circumstances, can benefit from their programs.

YMCA day camps play a crucial role in the Sarnia community, offering parents reliable full-day care for children aged 4-12. Beyond mere supervision, these camps are designed to foster physical activity, social skills, and emotional development. Paul Skuza, the general manager, highlights that feedback from parents consistently praises the positive effects on their children's well-being. "One parent told us, ‘Thank you for always providing such an amazing camp experience for my children. They love coming and can’t stop raving about the fun they have had on their way home. I trust the staff and know my children will be well cared for during their time there,’" he shares.

Each year, over 150 children participate daily in the YMCA's summer camps, with additional sessions during PD days, winter break, and March break. The camp's success is driven by a dedicated team of 25 staff members in the summer, supported by 15 child and youth staff throughout the year.

The YMCA's support extends far beyond the campgrounds. The organization is deeply committed to ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent families from accessing their programs. Paul recalls numerous instances where families received significant subsidies to participate. One poignant example involved a father who had recently lost his job. Despite his financial struggles, the YMCA subsidized 50% of his children's camp fees. This support not only allowed the children to enjoy their summer but also gave the father the time he needed to secure new employment.

The YMCA's day camps are carefully crafted to develop a wide range of skills in children. Physical activities such as sports, swimming, and walking promote fitness and health. Social skills like teamwork, leadership, patience, and communication are nurtured through group activities, while arts and crafts, singing, and dancing help develop creative abilities.

The "Fill the Bus" campaign is a testament to the YMCA's mission to serve the community. Since 2019, the initiative has enabled over 200 children to attend camp, with a hiatus only during the pandemic years. In 2023, the YMCA contributed over $200,000 to the Sarnia community in assisted memberships, reflecting their commitment to breaking down financial barriers. Paul notes, “At the Y, we believe in giving everyone the opportunity to benefit their overall health, regardless of their background or circumstances.”

The YMCA's philosophy is beautifully captured in their campaign message: “The greatest thing you can give a kid isn’t a thing; it’s a place. It’s a place where kids can explore and imagine, play and adventure. It’s a place where friendships come standard and are built on the values of kindness and acceptance. It’s a place to create memories that last a lifetime. You can give a child the gift of camp.”

Community members are encouraged to support the "Fill the Bus" campaign and help the YMCA reach its $20,000 goal. Contributions will directly sponsor 100 children, providing them with a week of enriching experiences and opportunities for growth. By supporting this initiative, we can collectively invest in the future of our children and the strength of our community.
