Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my deep concern and condemnation of the recent social media post made by City/County Councilor Bill Dennis regarding the state of Montana's ban on Drag Queen story hours. In his post, Dennis applauded the ban and described drag performances as "sick trash".
I find this post not only uneducated but also a dangerous spread of misinformation. It’s disheartening to see a public official, who is supposed to represent our community, disseminating such a hateful message.
Dennis's post comes at a particularly unfortunate time, just days before our annual PrideFest, which includes a drag Storytime event. Such comments escalate the risk for our community members and create an atmosphere of fear and hostility. It is unacceptable for a politician to use their platform to target and marginalize a community under the guise of protecting children.
We must continue to stand strong against bigotry and hatred. Attend PrideFest, participate in the drag Storytime, and be visible allies. Let us demonstrate that our community is one of love, acceptance, and solidarity.
Our politicians should focus on fostering unity and understanding, not spreading divisive and harmful messages. We need leaders who champion equality for all, not those who abuse their power to sow discord.
Sincerely,
Jessica Martin
