An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for Sarnia-Lambton as frigid temperatures and bitter wind chill values are expected into Monday.

Environment Canada says extreme cold conditions — including temperatures as low as –18 C and wind chill values as cold as –30 C are expected overnight into Monday morning.

“Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” an alert from Environment Canada stated. “Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.”

Monday’s forecast boasts a high of –13 C, with a wind chill of –28 C in the morning and –22 C in the afternoon, Environment Canada said, noting a risk of frostbite.

Flurries are expected to begin in the evening, with wind gusts of up to 15km/h and a low of –16 C. The wind chill will make it feel more like –24 C in the evening and –19 C overnight.

Residents are reminded to dress in layers with wind-resistant clothing.

“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” the agency added.
