The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) is expanding its Summer Company program in 2025 to support more students looking to start their own businesses this summer. The program, a joint initiative between SLEP and the Province of Ontario, has been fostering entrepreneurial spirit in students for over two decades.

For the first time, the program will support up to six students, a boost from previous years, thanks to additional funding from the Province. Students who are selected will receive up to $3,000 to help get their businesses off the ground.

The financial support includes an initial grant of $1,500 to launch the business and another $1,500 upon completion of the program, making it an opportunity to earn while gaining valuable business experience. Students will also receive training and mentorship to help them navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship, with guidance in areas like marketing, bookkeeping, and customer relations.

Matthew Slotwinski, CEO of SLEP, emphasized the broader benefits of the program, stating, “Summer Company is a cornerstone initiative that not only provides students with hands-on entrepreneurial experience but also contributes to the economic vibrancy of our community. We are thrilled to see this program continue to grow and support young entrepreneurs each year.”

The program’s expansion comes after a year of success stories. Sami Moussa, the founder of Forest Fungi, participated in the 2024 program, turning his passion for foraging and growing mushrooms into a thriving business. “The Summer Company program gave me the financial support and business training I needed to turn my love for foraging and growing mushrooms into a sustainable and successful business,” Moussa said. “The workshops, especially on pricing, were invaluable.”

The Summer Company program is open to students between 15 and 29 years old who are returning to school in the fall. In addition to the grant, participants will have the chance to develop essential business skills while earning income from their ventures.

Applications for the program are currently open, and students interested in learning more are invited to attend an Information Session on February 21st from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. The session will cover program details, eligibility requirements, and success stories from past participants. The webinar is free and will be held online, and students can register through the SLEP website.
