A passion for community and the drive to make a difference are at the heart of an upcoming benefit in Sarnia, as organizers aim to raise $25,000 for affordable supportive housing in the city. The event, hosted at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church on October 25, is spearheaded by Lynn Baarschers and Susan Schouten, with the help of a group of dedicated volunteers who are determined to bring meaningful change to their community.

Speaking with The Journal, Baarschers explained that her connection to the cause runs deep. “This really started many years ago,” she said. “I’ve lived and worked in this community my whole life. I’ve seen what great things Indwell is doing, and how much it has helped in other communities. I just want to really help and see this be successful.”

Indwell is a charity dedicated to creating affordable housing throughout Ontario. It has partnered with Lambton County to develop supportive housing initiatives that offer not only affordable rents but also access to health care, mental health services, and addiction recovery support. Baarschers and her team were inspired by the positive impact Indwell has had in Hamilton and believe that their fundraiser can significantly help expand these services locally.

The benefit dinner, which will feature a roast beef meal and live music by Jamie Baldwin, marks the second time Baarschers has led such an effort. “Last year, we did a fundraiser and sold tickets for $100 a chair, and it went really well,” she shared. “This year, we’ve upped the ticket price to $250, but we’re hoping that the buzz surrounding it will set it over the edge. The tickets are more, but there’s more money to be raised, and I think people understand the importance of what we’re doing.”

Baarschers emphasizes that this is a grassroots effort at its core. “If we make small changes at the grassroots level and take ownership of our community, we can see results little by little,” she explained. “I think everyone deserves a chance, and I’m so thankful to be a part of this event.”

Though the benefit is being held at a church, Baarschers states that the fundraiser is not a religious event. “We are absolutely welcoming people from all walks of life, and we hope it will be a great night.”

With 100 seats available and sponsors covering all event costs, attendees will receive a full tax receipt for their ticket purchase. This not only provides an opportunity to support a vital cause but also makes it a financially savvy choice. For those unable to attend, donations are still welcomed.

Looking ahead, Baarschers is optimistic about the future. “We’re hoping this will make a real difference in getting more affordable housing for the people who need it most. There are a lot of people in our community who want to help, and just don’t know how. I am so glad we can be a part of this to be that bridge among people who want to help.”

The event is being held at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church at 1281 Exmouth St in Sarnia on Friday, October 25, 2024, and will run from 5:30-8 pm. Tickets for the benefit dinner can be purchased by emailing the organizers at [email protected].
