Seven Sarnia athletes won nine medals at the Ontario high school track and field championships last week.
Sebastian Smith of Northern Collegiate and Cole Campbell of Alexander Mackenzie Secondary was each a double medalist, but a bronze won by Cormac Brown was perhaps the most compelling story.
The St. Patrick’s High School long jumper had fouled out on two of his three jumps at the meet in Mississauga. His lone qualifying distance of 6.19 metres left him in ninth and out of the finals.
But the athlete in eighth was disqualified for using foul language, moving Brown up a spot and giving him three more cracks in the medal round.
Brown then nailed a jump of 6.65 metres, allowing him to bring home the bronze.
Following are the Ontario medal winners from Sarnia:
Sebastian Smith, Northern Collegiate, gold, junior boys high jump - 1.90m
Matt Withers, Northern Collegiate, gold, senior boys javelin throw - 54.85 metres
