Local Conservatives have chosen their flag bearer for this year’s federal election.
Former riding association president Marilyn Gladu defeated two challengers to win the party nomination Saturday.
“I’m committed to creating jobs in our community and addressing the concerns of our aging demographic,” she said Monday, citing VIA rail cuts and shift of Blue Water Bridge control to Ottawa as two issues she heard frequently during the campaign.
“As a border community we have some unique opportunities and concerns,” said Gladhu, who edged Terry Nyp and Pete Aarssen to win the job of succeeding MP Pat Davidson.
Meanwhile, a third candidate entered the Liberal race last week.
David McPhail is a retired school principal and former chair of the local Chamber of Commerce who recently headed the successful Save the Jail committee.
Elizabeth Wood McDonald, a retired high school teacher and two-term Sarnia councillor, and Todd Case, the mayor of Warwick Township and a former Lambton County warden, also seek the Liberal nod.
The NDP elected Jason McMichael at the party’s Feb. 8 nomination meeting.
