A special ceremony will be held July 16 to honour a local sporting legend.
During the 3rd annual Stan Slack Classic baseball tournament a special ceremony will be held to rename the field at Errol Russell Park after the late Stan Slack.
The 3 p.m. ceremony is expected to draw many dignitaries and current and former players and coaches.
Slack grew up in Sarnia and signed a professional contract with the St. Louis Cardinals at the age of 14. In 1956, the Sarnia senior team adopted the name Braves and Slack pitched as well as coached the team.
He and Joe Panik launched the minor Braves program in 1994, which is still operating today.
Slack and his wife Marnie lived just beyond the center field fence of the park that will now be known as Stan Slack Field at Errol Russell Park.
The tournament runs July 15-17 with Sarnia opening Friday at 1:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. at Errol Russell.
Games will also begin at 1:15 p.m. at Blackwell Park. Play continues all day Saturday with the semifinals and final on Sunday.
