He’s an enduring staple of the local music scene, a Michigan export who has performed so often in Sarnia he’s frequently mistaken for a homegrown talent.

But Cliff Erickson’s next show in the city will be unique in more ways than one.

For starters, proceeds from the singer-songwriter’s Jan. 24 performance at Jack Doyle’s Irish Grille will go toward the Chris Dawson Foundation and Sarnia’s new prostate clinic.

He’ll also share the stage with a relative newcomer, his nephew Alex Shier.

While not a household name just yet, the Port Huron teenager is set to grace television sets across the continent as a contestant on the upcoming season of American Idol.

“He’s a 19-year-old kid who’s an extraordinary entertainer,” said Sue Baert, manager at Jack Doyle’s. “He’s a great kid.”

Shier should reap the benefits of performing alongside his popular uncle, whose shows are consistent sell-outs.

Although both hail from just over the border, Baert said the duo are an area success story.

“Cliff’s pretty popular, and the fact that they get to come out and see his nephew, who is a current Idol contestant, is pretty good for Sarnia,” she said. “(It’s good) that we have this kind of talent right in the area.”

For the uninitiated, Erickson is one of the Sarnia and Port Huron region’s most successful performers and known for soothing vocals and signature acoustic style.

He has opened for the likes of Ringo Starr, Kenny Rogers, The Beach Boys, Wynona Judd, and America.

As for the beneficiaries of the show, the Chris Dawson Foundation develops and manages centres for not-for-profit organizations, in addition to participating in educational opportunities and supporting charitable events.

The Sarnia prostate clinic is a recent addition to the city’s healthcare landscape. It opened last month.
