Sarnia is gearing up to host a Skilled Trade Career Expo, designed to tackle the growing skills gap in the local trades workforce. With a significant number of retirements expected by 2030, the event aims to inspire and educate the next generation of skilled workers through hands-on, interactive experiences.

The Expo is being organized by the Sarnia Lambton Workforce Development Board (SLWDB), with the support of community partners. SLWDB, a non-profit dedicated to research and growing the local workforce, is committed to bridging skills gaps and ensuring a robust future workforce. "Our goal is to promote local in-demand trades and showcase the opportunities available in these sectors," said Mikelle Bryson-Campbell, Executive Director of SLWDB.

The Expo will feature over 30 exhibitors representing trades such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, welding, automotive, construction, and hair styling. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore these trades through hands-on demonstrations, live demonstrations, and even virtual reality experiences. "We want people to see what a day in the trades might look like and engage directly with professionals who are working in the field," added Bryson-Campbell.

Open to the entire community, the Expo is particularly focused on individuals considering a career change or looking to explore the skilled trades. " This event is designed to offer insight into the career pathways and job prospects in skilled trades," she explained. Attendees will also have the chance to network with industry professionals, potential employers, and training providers.

The Expo isn’t just about education; it’s about supporting the local economy by preparing a workforce ready to step into skilled roles. By addressing the skills gap, the event strengthens local unions and employers who hire tradespeople, creating long-term benefits for the community.

The Skilled Trade Career Expo will take place at DeGroot’s Nurseries, 1840 London Line, on November 18, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The event is free to attend, and no pre-registration is required. Questions can be directed to Mikelle Bryson-Campbell, mikelle.[email protected].
