Local Entrepreneurs Cultivate Community Connection Through Organic Farming

The Sarnia Journal has partnered with local photographer Art Connolly to feature his captivating “Humans of Sarnia” series as he delves into the lives and experiences of everyday people in Sarnia.

In the heart of Lambton County, Shane and Emma Rozeveld are redefining what it means to be sustainable farmers. As the owners of Aslan Organics, the husband-and-wife duo have turned their 1.5-acre farm located in Camlachie Ontario into a beacon of organic agriculture and community-driven food production. The farm will be moving to a larger location at 3107 Michigan Line in Camlachie Ontario on April 1, 2025.

From their fields, they cultivate more than 30 varieties of fresh, seasonal vegetables year-round, bringing their bounty to the Sarnia Farmers Market, where they have built a loyal customer base. But for the Rozevelds, their mission goes beyond just selling produce—it’s about connecting people to their food and fostering a deeper appreciation for sustainable farming.

A Passion for Organic Agriculture

During a recent visit to the bustling market, Shane Rozeveld took a moment to share his passion for organic farming, his enthusiasm evident in every word.

“We’re not just growing vegetables; we’re fostering a relationship between the land, the food, and the people who eat it,” Shane said.

This philosophy is at the core of Aslan Organics, which operates with a strong commitment to natural and eco-friendly farming practices. The couple steers clear of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, instead opting for techniques like crop rotation, composting, and soil enrichment to maintain a healthy, chemical-free ecosystem. Their approach not only preserves the land but also enhances the nutritional value of the food they produce.

Bringing the Community Closer to the Farm

One of the standout aspects of Aslan Organics is its farm-sharing model, which allows customers to become active participants in the farming process. Through this initiative, customers purchase a share in the farm’s harvest and receive regular boxes of fresh, locally grown vegetables throughout the season.

Farm sharing offers multiple benefits:

  • Guaranteed fresh, seasonal produce for participants
  • Financial stability for the farm, ensuring continued sustainability
  • A deeper connection between consumers and their food sources

This model not only supports the farm’s success but also strengthens the relationship between growers and consumers, reinforcing a sense of shared responsibility for local food systems.

Educating and Engaging the Community

Beyond growing food, the Rozevelds are committed to educating their customers. They often take time at the market to discuss the benefits of organic farming, soil health, and sustainable food choices, helping Sarnians make informed decisions about what they eat.

For those who want to learn more, Aslan Organics’ website (https://www.aslanorganics.ca/home) offers insights into their farming methods, available produce, and farm-sharing opportunities. Visitors can also find updates on events, workshops, and ways to support sustainable agriculture in the region.

A Growing Movement Toward Sustainability

Aslan Organics is gaining recognition as more Sarnians seek organic and locally sourced foods. The farm serves as a shining example of how small-scale agriculture can have a significant impact on health, the environment, and local economies.

For those already embracing organic living or for newcomers curious about its benefits, Aslan Organics proves that passion and perseverance can create lasting change. For Shane and Emma, farming isn’t just about cultivating vegetables—it’s about cultivating a healthier, more connected community.
