The weekend marks Sarnia-Lambton’s first-ever ‘Women’s Hockey Day’ as young female athletes — along with some of the top women’s hockey players in North America — take to the ice Saturday.

Sarnia is the second Ontario stop for the coveted Rivalry Series — a seven-game series between Canada’s national women’s hockey team and Team USA — now underway. Following the Sarnia stop, the teams will head to Saskatoon and Regina Feb. 7 and 9, and wrap up in Minnesota on Feb. 11.

Before the puck drops Saturday at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena, fans are invited to watch local matches featuring select teams from the Sarnia Lady Sting, Mooretown Lady Flags and Lambton Attack — ranging in age from U7 to U18 — from 12:15 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“Show your Canadian pride by wearing red and white on Friday, December 15 and Saturday December 16 as we welcome the top Women’s Hockey players from Canada and the USA to Sarnia-Lambton,” a Tourism Sarnia-Lambton news release noted, adding that a limited number of tickets to the marquee game at 5 p.m. are still available. Fans are encouraged to contact the Sarnia Sting box office for more information.

More than 150 local players will also have the opportunity to participate in Hockey Canada’s Esso Fun Day, on Friday, receiving on-ice instruction, mental performance training, dryland training, and additional activities.

The Rivalry Series will be collecting non-perishable food items and unwrapped toys in support of the Inn of the Good Shepherd, the Native Friendship Centre, and Lion’s Heart Food Bank at Lambton College. Donations will be collected at entrance doors #2 and #5.
