It was a winning weekend for local female hockey players, who brought home some hardware from the 2024 Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) Provincial Championships held in the GTA, April 11-14.
The Mooretown Lady Flags U11 ‘B’ team and Sarnia Lady Sting U15 ‘B’ team both won gold at the tournament, while the Lambton attack U18 ‘BB’ team earned silver, and the Lambton Lightning took bronze in the Senior Women’s division.
The Mooretown Lady Flags’ championship win marked the first-ever provincial gold for the association, following a bronze medal for the U11 ‘C’ team in 2022.
The team went 5-and-0 on the weekend — downing the Cambridge Roadrunners (9-0), Cold Creek Comets (3-0), Sault Ste. Marie (1-0), Brantford Ice Cats (3-0) and South Huron Sabres (1-0), with a shutout tournament for goaltender Skyla Vandenheuvel. Their championship win capped off an impressive (52-2-4) season, following gold medal wins at the Oakville Hornets Tournament, Sarnia International Women’s Silverstick Tournament and Walter Gretzky Tournament.
The U15 ‘B’ Lady Sting team went 6-and-0 on the weekend, downing the Oakville Hornets (5-0), North Bay Junior Lakers (4-0), Ilderton Jets (1-0), Whitby Wolves (3-2), Collingwood Lightning (2-1), and capping off the weekend with a 1-0 championship win over the Ennismore Eagles. The team boasted an impressive 40-3-12 record on the season, capturing gold at the Stratford Aces Cup, silver at the Clarington Applefest, and gold at the Sarnia International Women’s Silverstick.
The championship win follows last year's OWHA bronze medal for the Jr. Lady Sting's U11 'B' team.
The Lambton Attack U18 ‘BB’ team went 4-1-1 on the weekend, falling just short to the South Huron Sabres in the gold medal game, 2-0.
The Lambton Lightning Senior C team won their bronze medal game 3-0 over the Norfolk Hericanes.
