Residents will have the chance to take in some incredible girls’ hockey this weekend when the 24th annual Women’s International Silver Stick Finals kicks off Friday in Sarnia.
“We would love for people to come out and watch,” said tournament director David Schrie, pointing to 59 teams in eight divisions from across Ontario and the U.S. set to hit the ice Jan. 5-7.
“We’ve got teams from as far away as Seattle, Washington; Denver, Colorado, and Detroit.”
Teams range from U11 to U18, and will take over six ice pads at four arenas — Clearwater, Progressive Auto Sales, Pat Stapleton and Point Edward. Local teams include the hosting Sarnia Jr. Lady Sting, as well as the Mooretown Lady Flags and Lambton Attack Girls Hockey Associations.
“Friday night at 7 p.m. is the opening ceremonies at Pat Stapleton Arena,” Schrie said. “We’ll have Sarnia facing the Detroit Honeybaked in U15 girls, it’ll be a great one to watch.”
A small committee of volunteers keeps the tournament running, he added, covering everything from running the score clock and greeting visitors.
"There are new individuals coming forward to help out, which is good,” Schrie said.
