The Chatham Maroons were less than gracious hosts Sunday night, scoring seemingly at will, including Brendan Gouin’s four goals and two assists, in a 9-2 win over the Sarnia Legionnaires.
Chatham has won all four meetings now this season, scoring six or more goals a game.
The Maroons got to work early, as David Brown tallied his sixth of the season just over a minute into the game, setting the tone early.
Gouin gave the Maroons a 2-0 lead before the game was four minutes old, his fifth of the year. The Maroons would get their first powerplay chance late in the first and Blain Bacik made it 3-0 with the man advantage, with just 28 seconds left in the period.
The second period saw the teams trade goals and fists.
Ty Therrien and Ayden McKinlay dropped the gloves midway into the period. Moments after the fight, the Maroons extended their lead to 4-0 on Gouin’s second of the game, and sixth of the season.
Sarnia would respond with a powerplay goal — Owen Brown’s third of the season put the Legionnaires on the board, trailing 4-1.
In the third, the penalty minutes continued to pile up, as did the goals.
The teams traded goals to start the third period; Gouin completed the hat trick before Jace McGrail notched his third of the season, cutting the Maroons lead to 5-2.
The teams also continued to trade penalty minutes.
It was all Maroons from there — Gouin added one more to give himself eight goals on the season, four in that game. Aidan Edwards scored twice in the third as well — he now has six goals this season — while Braeden Burke scored his 10th as Chatham coasted to a 9-2 final.
Logan Phillips got the start, making 15 saves on 18 shots before Jack Martin was called in for the second period. Martin had 17 saves on 23 shots.
The Legionnaires now drop to 9-10-1-0 on the season, and were unable to extend their win streak to three.
The Legionnaires return home Thursday night to host the St Mary’s Lincolns, puck drops at 7:10 at the Pat Stapleton Arena.
