Sarnia’s Boady Santavy did not place in the men’s 89kg weightlifting event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Friday.

Santavy, 27, was in ninth position after the snatch portion of the event, having cleared 163kg on his second attempt.

But he wasn’t able to complete any of his three clean-and-jerk attempts, due to what appeared to be a knee injury.

Bulgaria's Karlos Nasar won gold, lifting 224kg in the clean-and-jerk for a new world record, giving him a world record in the overall lift with 404 kg.

Colombia’s Yeison Lopez took silver with a total of 390 kg, and Italy's Antonino Pizzolatto won bronze with 384 kg.

Santavy, who underwent elbow surgery last year, finished 4th in the 96kg class in Tokyo; he’d been in the bronze medal position after the snatch, but missed the podium by one kilogram.

He was one of two weightlifters representing Canada at the Paris Games; Maude Charron (Rimouski, Que.) won silver in the women’s 59kg event, Aug. 8.

Team Canada’s weightlifting coaching staff also includes Santavy’s father, Dalas Santavy.

Santavy won silver at the 2019 Pan American Games, a silver and bronze at the Pan American Championships in 2020 and 2019 respectively, and a silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
