A team of students from Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School won bronze at the 2023 Special Olympics Ontario School Championships at Queen’s University in Kingston, this week.

The team, comprised of athletes with intellectual disabilities, earned their ticket to the event  — that brought together more than 1,000 athletes from secondary schools across Ontario — after winning the basketball qualifier event earlier this year.

“We are so proud of these athletes and how hard they worked to get here,” said Sarah Hotke, AMSS teacher and head coach. “They showed confidence and sportsmanship on and off the court throughout the entire tournament.

“We are honoured to be the first school team to not only represent Alexander Mackenzie but all of Sarnia-Lambton at a Special Olympics Ontario School Championships.”
