Two Incidents Involving Fake Taxi Frauds

The Sarnia Police Service is investigating two incidents which occurred on July 14, 2024, involving parties operating a black sedan scamming local residents.  Both incidents occurred in the commercial corridor on London Road, between Murphy Road and Lambton Mall Road.

In the first incident, a male party, with a young child situated beside the cab, approached the victim and asked the victim to assist in paying $6.00 for the child to take the cab.  The victim then paid for the cab by using his debit card.  The victim later learned that his card had been defrauded of $3800 in unwanted, fraudulent, purchases.

In the second incident, a male was approached by two white males in a black sedan.  The passenger in the vehicle advised the victim that he booked a cab only to learn that the driver did not accept cash.  He asked for assistance from the victim to use his debit card for the purchase.  The victim agreed to do so and the passenger gave him $10 in cash for the $7.50 debit purchase.  The victim later learned that his card had been used for $2400 in unwanted, fraudulent, purchases.

The Sarnia Police Service is asking that members of the public who may have been approached by these individuals, notify the Sarnia Police of the time and location of the incident.  This will assist in obtaining better video of the individuals responsible for these frauds.  Please contact Detective Constable Pat Moloney at (519)344-8861 x6239.

The Sarnia Police Service also advised that individuals should never use their debit and/or credit cards unless they are doing so at reputable businesses.
