Sarnia Police Service To Have Increased Presence On Halloween

spsmediarelease2

In preparation for Halloween, the Sarnia Police Service is announcing increased police presence throughout downtown neighbourhoods to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for families. In addition to traditional safety measures, this year officers will be patrolling in both cruisers and on bicycles, giving children and community members more opportunities to interact with local law enforcement in a positive and approachable manner.

“We want this Halloween to be safe and fun for everyone,” says Deputy Chief Mike Van Sickle.  “Our officers will not only be out in greater numbers to provide security, but they will also be engaging with the community, especially children, to help foster trust and build stronger relationships.”

Key elements of the department’s plan include:

  • Enhanced Patrols: Officers will be positioned throughout neighbourhoods, with patrols on foot, in cruisers, and on bicycles to ensure better visibility and quicker response times.
  • Friendly Engagements: Police officers on foot and bicycles will be stopping to chat with children and families offering Halloween safety tips to make the event fun while reinforcing safety practices.

Deputy Chief Van Sickle emphasizes that the goal is not only to keep residents safe but also to encourage positive interactions between officers and the community: "We hope the sight of officers on bicycles and in cruisers will help parents and kids feel secure, and also remind everyone that we are here as part of the community. Children are encouraged to wave or say hello to officers that they see patrolling."

To help ensure safety, the Sarnia Police Service is offering these tips:

  • For Parents: Equip your children with reflective gear and flashlights, accompany young children, and remind them to only approach homes with the lights on.
  • For Drivers: Exercise caution, especially in residential areas, and drive slowly, watching for children crossing streets or stepping off of curbs unexpectedly.
  • For Trick-or-Treaters: Stick to well-lit areas, travel in groups, and make sure to greet officers who are there to help!

The Sarnia Police Service asks that any suspicious activity be reported immediately through the non-emergency line at 519-344-8861 or in the case of an emergency, dial 911.

Deputy Chief Van Sickle concluded, "We look forward to seeing everyone out enjoying Halloween safely, and we want all families to know that the Sarnia Police Service is here to ensure that the night is filled with fun, not fear."
