spsmediarelease

On July 2, 2024, at 11:41am, police were called to a traffic complaint for a male on a bicycle in the middle of Confederation Street at Ontario Street attempting to hit cars.

At 11:52am, police were called to The Inn of the Good Shepherd at 950 Confederation Line, Sarnia for a male matching the description form the traffic incident moments.  The male appeared to be under the influence of drugs, attempting to smash the front window, and uttering threats.  Responding officers placed him under arrest for Causing a Disturbance and transported him into police custody.

The male identified himself to police.  However, subsequent investigation revealed that the provided name was false. The suspect was subject to a court imposed probation order with conditions to keep the peace and be of good behaviour.

It was further revealed that the suspect had falsely identified himself to police in multiple previous incidents, concealing the existence of his court conditions.  The suspect would have been in violation of his probation for failing to keep the peace and be of good behavior on those occasions had his proper identity been known.

The 28 year old suspect has been charged and held for bail for the following offences

  • Uttering Threats
  • Causing a Disturbance
  • Fail to Comply with Probation X 8
  • Obstruct Police X 6
  • Mischief Under $5000

On July 3, following his bail hearing, the suspect was ordered released from custody on a Recognizance of Bail for all outstanding charges currently before the court.

General Information on Bail Hearings

“Held for bail” means the police chose to not release an accused person back into the community. However, as the police cannot hold a person in custody for longer than 24 hours, we are required to send them to bail court, where they will have a bail hearing. There, the presiding judge or Justice of the Peace will decide on whether the person should be released into the community or not.

“Released on bail” means the police held them in custody, but a subsequent release decision by the courts was made.

“Remanded” into custody means the accused was not granted release by the courts.

The bail system provides a framework to oversee and put limits on police custody. It is governed by legislation including the Criminal Code of Canada.
