A 29-year-old Sarnia man faces numerous charges in connection to a pair of incidents involving a suspect smashing property with a hammer.

Sarnia Police say officers were called to reports of a male wielding a hammer in the area of 600 Murphy Road, Friday.

“While enroute, responding officers received additional information that the male had smashed out the glass of a bus shelter,” a news release noted. “There were approximately 30 citizens waiting at the bus terminal as this incident occurred. The male was quickly located and immediately taken into custody without incident. No physical injuries were reported by any member of the public.”

Police say further investigation revealed that same suspect was involved in an earlier incident when a woman was followed to her vehicle in a parking lot on Afton Drive.

“Without provocation, he used the hammer to repeatedly strike her vehicle,” police stated. “The victim, out of fear, drove her vehicle out of the parking lot while the suspect gave chase on foot, waving the hammer in the air."

The victim in this incident was not injured, but the vehicle sustained extensive damage.

A 29-year-old man faces the following charges:

  • Two counts of Mischief not exceeding $5,000
  • One count of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • One count of Failure to Comply with Release Order
  • Three counts of Failure to Comply with Probation

The accused appeared before a Justice of the Peace by video on January 27, 2024 for a bail hearing, and was remanded into custody at the Sarnia Jail. He is scheduled to appear in Court on January 30, 2024.
