Imagine a vibrant new park at Ferry Dock Hill, transforming Sarnia’s waterfront into a bustling hub of activity and connection. This vision is within our grasp, but it requires our community’s support to become a reality. The proposed park would create a vital gateway linking downtown Sarnia with the shores of the St. Clair River, revitalizing the area and unlocking its potential as a cherished public space. However, as of now, this transformative project remains unfunded, awaiting a crucial decision from city council to allocate resources.

Why This Park Matters

The proposed redevelopment of Ferry Dock Hill is more than just a park; it’s the first significant capital project under Sarnia’s Waterfront Master Plan. With its strategic location at the southernmost point of the waterfront, this linear park would establish an essential connection between downtown and the riverfront. The project’s scope, developed through public consultations and stakeholder input, reflects the community’s aspirations for a lively, accessible, and inclusive space.

Two initial design concepts, crafted by Brook McIlroy landscape architects, offer exciting glimpses into what this park could become:

  • Concept A: Features a naturalized playground, a flexible gathering area for events, a tree-lined boulevard with a separated bike lane, and scenic lookouts.

  • Concept B: Highlights an urban beach with sand and seating, an interactive water feature, picnicking areas, and a pedestrian gateway.

Both concepts include thoughtful design elements to enhance accessibility, foster community engagement, and celebrate the natural beauty of Sarnia’s waterfront.

Why Public Spaces Matter

Parks and public spaces like the proposed Ferry Dock Hill revitalization are vital to the health and vibrancy of cities. They provide opportunities for community connection, where people from all walks of life can come together to socialize, celebrate, and collaborate. These spaces encourage active lifestyles by offering areas for walking, cycling, and outdoor recreation, contributing to healthier residents and reducing stress. Moreover, they enhance the overall quality of life by creating inviting environments that inspire pride and belonging. Public spaces also act as economic drivers, attracting visitors, boosting local businesses, and increasing property values in surrounding areas. Investing in parks is an investment in the well-being and prosperity of the entire community.

Funding the Dream

To bring this vision to life, city council must decide how to fund the project. There are two main options:

  1. Strategic Debt: Borrowing funds to invest in the park.

  1. Reallocation of Existing Funds: Redirecting resources from other capital projects.

We believe strategic debt is the best path forward. Responsible debt management is a cornerstone of city planning, and the return on investment from projects like this can be transformative. Building this park will attract visitors, encourage community gatherings, and boost local businesses. If we delay or defer, we risk losing an opportunity to create a space that benefits everyone.

City council’s role is to make tough decisions, but they need to hear from us. Let’s remind them that Sarnia Wants Nice Things and that this park is a priority for our downtown and community. Together, we can show our support and advocate for this vital project.
