Dear Editor:
Re: Sarnia dog owner heartbroken after shih tzu attacked, killed at dog park
I feel terrible for the family that lost their small dog due to the brutal indifference of another dog owner.
I stopped taking my dog to Blackwell Dog Park years ago. It’s the owners that pride themselves on having the biggest, toughest, baddest, dogs that really ruin everything.
They walk into the park and immediately turn their backs on their dogs that run a few yards away and relieve themselves.
These owners pretend that they have no idea what their dog did and so never clean up after them. They don’t even bring bags. They let their dogs brutalize and intimidate other dogs and their owners while all the while saying, “Hey they’re dogs, just doin’ what dogs do.”
It’s so irresponsible, and there’s really nothing you can do about it.
There is no reasoning with these people and you realize that quite quickly. You just shake your head and try to protect your dog and leave.
The best thing you can do is head for the nearest gate when you see them coming and again, just leave.
I transferred over to the small dog park, but started getting complaints from people that my dog was too big. She was a midsize black lab mix, docile, friendly and standoffish. She just liked to sniff around the fence and keep to herself.
But I didn’t want to offend anyone so, we would just leave at the first sign of dog owner distress. We ended up walking the trails at Canatara Park. It was very peaceful with no hassles.
