At Bluewater Health, January 11, 2024, Robert Lorne Garrett passed away quietly in his 92nd year after a life well lived. Survived by his wife Marilyn of 63 years, sons Hugh (Judy) of Sarnia and Alex (Julie) of London, grandchildren Keith (Allie) of Point Edward, Ben of Sarnia, Annie, Alex and Katie of London. Predeceased by parents Alexander and Verna (Denison) Garrett of Sarnia, brothers Hugh (Norma) of Sarnia and Mooretown, and Paul (Annette) of Calgary. Born in Eastern Ontario, Lorne grew up in Toronto, graduated from UWO in 1955, and began his teaching career. He moved his small family to Sarnia in 1966 where he headed the history department at Northern Collegiate and later at Sarnia Collegiate until his early retirement in 1988. He and Marilyn then travelled extensively through many continents. A congenial soul, he made many friends here and in Port Elgin where the family spent their summers. Lorne’s interests included the stock market, playing bridge, and pool, and watching baseball. He lived well, generously, and enjoyed many experiences with kindness and curiosity and even his occasional ‘curmudgeonliness’ and “not suffering fools” (yappy people) was endearing. He always said “the best beer was the one in front of him”. Thank you kindly to the staff at both Fairwinds and Landmark where Lorne was happily and kindly treated. Cremation has taken place. An open house to celebrate Lorne’s life will be held at the Smith Family Centre (in front of Smith Funeral Home), 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Bluewater Health Foundation, to honour the excellent care he received by the nurses, or a charity of choice (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia.
