Venetian Boulevard next big Point Edward project

Within weeks, a key stretch of Venetian Boulevard will be closed for major repairs.

Within weeks, a key stretch of Venetian Boulevard will be closed for major repairs.

The section of the street that runs from Alexandra Avenue to the turn into the Point Edward Casino will shut down to all traffic for about two weeks, says Mayor Larry Mackenzie.

Once the first phase is complete, the rest of Venetian will be dug up to Exmouth Street and traffic will be restricted to one way, he said.

The $1.3-million project will see new underground services, new paving and replacement of the interlocking brick on the Venetian walkway.

The village’s responsibility for one-third of the cost was approved during budget deliberations in late March. Lambton County will shoulder the rest of the price tag.

Federal gas tax of $120,000 and a $20,000 provincial grant are helping defray the village’s share, said Mackenzie.

Village council also approved the replacement of most streetlights in Point Edward with more efficient LED lighting.  That $250,000 project will begin in June.

The 2014 budget came in at $7.9 million, including about $3 million in capital work.

It includes an increase of 1.83% over 2013. When blended with Lambton County and education tax rates, the increase for Point Edward residents is less than one per cent this year.
