Corunna residents can expect an increase in noise, flaring and traffic as a scheduled maintenance turnaround, or shutdown, gets underway at NOVA Chemicals’ St. Clair River Site, officials said this week.

More than 300 additional contractors are expected on site for the duration of the outage, slated to last into early October.

“Our focus is safe and reliable operations at all times, and one of our planning priorities is to minimize potential impacts to the community," the company stated. “During the first few of days of the outage, elevated flaring and some increased noise are expected. There will be increased traffic in the area of the site for the duration of the outage, specifically between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., and between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.”

Traffic management plans are in place, the company added, and will be “continuously monitored should additional control measures need to be implemented to enhance safety and reduce risk.”
