St. Joseph’s Hospice is expanding its services with the addition of three new hospice beds, part of a province-wide effort to increase access to end-of-life care. The expansion was announced as part of the Ontario government’s 2024 budget, which allocates $19.75 million to create 84 new hospice beds across Ontario.

“This expansion will enable us to provide even more families with the exceptional care and support that St. Joseph's Hospice is known for,” said Kelly Chartrand, Executive Director of St. Joseph’s Hospice. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to delivering holistic care that addresses not only physical needs but also the emotional and spiritual well-being of our residents and their loved ones.”

The additional beds will be located in a dedicated rural space, which will include private suites with washrooms, a kitchenette, a common area, and accessible parking. Renovations to meet Ministry of Health standards are planned, with an opening date expected in late 2025.

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey applauded the news, noting it is part of a broader effort to add hospice beds across the province. “I’m overjoyed by the news that St. Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia-Lambton is receiving three new residential hospice beds as part of our government’s commitment in the 2024 budget to add 84 new hospice beds in the province,” said Bailey. “I want to thank the Minister of Health, the team at St. Joseph’s Hospice, and everyone in the community that has advocated for this increased investment.”

For families in rural areas, the expansion is expected to improve access to care. “This is a wonderful opportunity to extend compassionate hospice care to families in rural areas who may have faced barriers in accessing services,” said Sally Jenkins, Director of Residence Services. “These additional beds will bring high-quality, end-of-life care closer to those living in rural communities, ensuring equitable access and support during such a critical time.”

The project was made possible with the guidance of Hospice Palliative Care Ontario and the continued support of community advocacy. To sustain operational costs for the new beds, St. Joseph’s Hospice will increase its annual fundraising efforts.

“We are confident that our community will continue to support us as they always have, ensuring we can provide these new services while maintaining the level of care and dignity that residents and their families deserve,” said Maria Muscedere, Director of Fund Development and Community Relations.

Since opening in 2009, St. Joseph’s Hospice has provided care to over 2,450 residents and offered caregiver and bereavement support to more than 4,800 individuals. Its services are supported by over 360 volunteers and staff and are provided at no cost to residents or their families.
