A Sarnia Police officer is in London hospital after a stabbing at a city apartment late Tuesday.

Around 10:30 p.m. the Sarnia Police Service (SPS) received a call about a male in distress in an apartment at the Front Street Seaway building, police said in a news release.

“Police responded to that location and out of concern for the individual involved, officers made entry into an apartment unit in an attempt to locate the person involved.

“While searching the apartment, the occupant emerged from a concealed location armed with an edged weapon and attacked the responding officers,” officials added. “One officer received multiple stab wounds in the head, neck, and arms, sustaining serious injuries. Following immediate first aid at the scene, he was transported to Bluewater Health by Ambulance, and later to London Health Sciences for further treatment.”

All available on-duty resources responded to this call.

The officer, a 13-year veteran with the Sarnia Police Service, is expected to recover, and a 36-year-old of Sarnia has been charged with attempted murder and held for a bail hearing.

“This unprovoked attack demonstrates the real dangers faced by officers,” chief Derek Davis said in a statement, noting that the criminal investigative division is involved.

He also thanked the responding teams from Lambton County EMS, Bluewater Health and London Health Sciences.

“It is difficult to fully express our appreciation for their swift and professional care provided to our injured member at every step.”
