Sarnia City Council will deliberate proposed adjustments to transit fees during Tuesday’s budget deliberations. Among the changes is the introduction of an annual bus pass, calculated by multiplying the monthly fee by 12, offering riders a full-year option.
For students, no increases are proposed for semester passes, keeping current rates for elementary and high school riders. A new summer pass at a reduced rate is planned for students and seniors aged 60 and older to encourage ridership during the summer months.
A weekend pass will also be introduced, valid from Friday at 6:30 p.m. through Sunday service, offering unlimited weekend travel.
The cost of replacing smart cards is set to rise by 40%, increasing to $7 per card. Staff are also recommending removing the no-cost replacement for first-time card replacements due to rising costs and demand.
For low-income individuals, the Inn of the Good Shepherd – Low Income Qualified Program will lower the cost of standard passes and ticket sheets by an additional $2, providing further financial relief to eligible riders.
These proposed adjustments will be discussed during Tuesday’s meeting, where Council will decide on transit costs for 2025.
