Sarnia’s Ryan Davies won gold in the men’s U20 3,000-metre steeplechase event at the Bell Canadian Track & Field Championships last week.

The recent graduate of Northern Collegiate put up a time of 9:19.17 at the event held at McLeod Athletic Park, in Langley, BC, where he represented the London Western Track & Field Club.

He also placed 9th in the men’s U20 3,000 metre race, Sunday.

Davies has committed to join the cross country and distance track program at McMaster University, marking what head coach Paula Schnurr is calling, ‘the best incoming class that I have seen in my years,’ according to a McMaster news article, noting several other impressive recruits. He will study integrated business and humanities at the university.

"I am excited to be part of a strong incoming class of rookies that can work and develop together and see similar success as the now graduated members of last year's U SPORTS Championship-winning team were able to achieve,” Davies was quoted.

In June, Davies defended his OFSAA steeplechase title, and also placed fourth in the senior boys’ 3,000-metre race.

And just last week, he was named co-winner of the Sarnia-Lambton Sports Hall of Fame’s Pappy Burr Award, which goes to outstanding students about to enter post secondary education.

Davies maintained a 97 percent average during his four years at Sarnia’s Northern Collegiate. He has also been a volunteer for the Inn of the Good Shepherd, has worked with youth to improve literacy skills and has assisted at local tennis tournaments, among other things.
