Purple Cherokee tomato selected for this year's One Seed Lambton program

Lambton County Library has selected the heirloom Purple Cherokee tomato for this year’s One Seed Lambton program, providing free seeds to residents while supplies last.

Lambton County Library has announced that the Purple Cherokee tomato is the featured selection for this year’s One Seed Lambton initiative, an annual program aimed at encouraging residents to grow their own food. The initiative provides free vegetable seeds and educational resources to gardeners of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced growers.

The Purple Cherokee tomato, an heirloom variety, is prized for its rich taste and high productivity. Those interested in growing it can pick up free seed packets at any Lambton County Library location starting March 10.

As part of the program, a series of gardening-related events will be held at various library branches in the coming months, offering educational opportunities on topics ranging from garden preparation to seed saving.

Upcoming One Seed Lambton events include:

  • Coldwater Kitchen Screening – March 27, 6:30-8:45 p.m., Sarnia Library Theatre. A documentary showcasing a culinary training program inside a Michigan prison, winner of the 2023 James Beard Foundation Media Award.

  • Adult DIY: Vintage Seed Packet Planter – April 1, 1:00-2:00 p.m., Petrolia Library.

  • Grow Your Food – April 2, 6:30-8:00 p.m., Sarnia Library. A discussion on growing food from heirloom seeds with gardener Denis Leblanc and biodiversity advocate Rachelle Floin.

  • Preparing Your Garden – April 22, 1:00-2:00 p.m., Petrolia Library. Felicia from Sycamore Farms will share tips on starting a garden from seed.

  • Adult DIY: Plant Exchange and Garden Stakes – April 29, 1:00-2:00 p.m., Petrolia Library. An opportunity to exchange plants, cuttings, bulbs, or seedlings with fellow gardeners.

  • Native Plants and Pollinators – May 13, 2:00-3:00 p.m., Corunna Library. Dylan Henry from Maajigin Gumig will present on the benefits of native plants and pollinators in gardening.

  • Seed Saving with Michael Schimp – August 14, 6:00-7:00 p.m., Wyoming Library. A workshop on saving seeds for future planting seasons.

In addition to the One Seed Lambton initiative, the Lambton County Library also offers a Seed Library, featuring over 60 varieties of vegetable and flower seeds available for borrowing. More information on the collection can be found at lclibrary.ca/seedlibrary.
