Sarnia Police say there is no threat to public safety following a “targeted” shooting that sent one victim to hospital with serious injuries, Monday.

“Sarnia Police are satisfied that this was a targeted event between parties who are believed to be known to each other,” police said in a news release, adding that the suspect and firearm have not yet been located. “As this investigation is in its infancy, the Sarnia Police will not be releasing further details of the event at this time, in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.”

Police say the incident occurred just after midnight, Monday, when the victim and his girlfriend returned to a residence in the 200 block of Napier Street in Sarnia.

“The victim pulled into the driveway and exited from his vehicle at which time he observed a masked suspect,” a news release noted. “The suspect brandished a firearm and began shooting, striking him three times, once in the neck and twice in the chest.

“The victim and his girlfriend managed to flee the scene and get away from the suspect. The victim ran to the Sarnia Police Service to report the shooting incident.”

The victim was taken Bluewater Health for initial treatment for the gunshot wounds before being airlifted to London for further treatment for his serious injuries. Police said Wednesday that the victim was still in hospital, in stable condition.

“The Sarnia Police Service Criminal Investigations Division is actively investigating and asks the public for their assistance,” police added. “If you live in the area of Napier, Parker, Nelson and Christina Street and have home or business surveillance recorded between the hours of midnight and 2 a.m., to please deliver a copy or contact investigators to assist in retrieving it.”
