Imperial Oil has reported a minor release of biomass from its water treatment system into the St. Clair River on the morning of December 3, 2024. The spill was contained within the facility’s outfall area.

To manage the incident, the company deployed booms in the affected area and stationed a vacuum truck on-site as a precaution to prevent further discharges. The spill has been reported to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks. A Code 10 notification from Sarnia Police noted that the spill does not involve a substance classified as toxic under Ontario Regulation 222/07

While the exact quantity of biomass released has not been disclosed, Imperial Oil emphasized that containment measures are in place and that the spill poses no ongoing risk. The Sarnia Journal will provide updates as more information becomes available.
