Sarnia’s neighbourhoods have seen a heartwarming transformation in recent years, with the rise of Little Free Libraries—small, colourful book-sharing boxes that have become symbols of creativity, generosity, and community spirit. Scattered across Lambton County, these libraries offer residents and visitors an opportunity to discover new books, connect with their neighbours, and appreciate the unique artistry that each library embodies.

Throughout the past few years, these hidden literary gems have captured the attention of many in the community. Some notable libraries can be found at 253 Bright St., 944 Greendale Ave., 925 McCaw St., and 740 Cathcart Blvd. Each location reflects the personality and care of its caretaker, turning simple book exchanges into cherished community landmarks.

One particularly special library is located on Cathcart Boulevard. This little library doubles as a monarch butterfly sanctuary, adding an extra layer of charm to its already vibrant presence. Adorned with bright colours and a carefully selected doorknob, the Cathcart library is a testament to the love and attention its creator has invested. It’s not just a place to borrow or donate books—it’s a destination that invites visitors to pause, admire, and reflect on the creativity that makes Sarnia so special.

For those eager to explore these libraries, maps are available at littlefreelibrary.org, and Lambton Literacy provides a more comprehensive list specifically for Sarnia.

The Bright Little Library at 253 Bright St. stands out as a shining example of how these small structures can bring a community together. For the past two years, Lauren Davidson, the library’s caretaker, has poured her heart and soul into maintaining this vibrant community resource. Lauren, who recently transitioned to full-time work as an artist, has infused her creative talents into the library, making it not just a repository for books but a work of art in itself.

The exterior of the Bright Little Library is adorned with unique artistic touches from neighbourhood children, reflecting Lauren’s passion for art and community. Her experience as a barista at Starbucks Oak Acres, where she worked until this past winter, played a significant role in the library’s early days. A book drive at her workplace brought in an overwhelming number of donations, with customers and co-workers eager to contribute to the fledgling library. Lauren fondly recalls Arthur, her son, stacking books high in their living room before the library was complete. Since then, the library has continued to grow, with books coming in from all corners of the community.

Lauren’s commitment to the Bright Little Library extends beyond simply keeping it stocked. During the winter months, she adds an extra touch of magic by wrapping books with a brief description on the outside, turning each visit into a little mystery for visitors. “It’s been such a great way to get to know the community,” Lauren shared in a recent interview. The library has become a popular spot for people from the nearby hospital to visit during their lunch breaks, fostering connections that might not have happened otherwise.

The Bright Little Library has also become a beloved spot for Lauren’s young neighbours, Harlow and Hudson Young. These two children, along with their grandmother Marlene and mother Tina, visit the library several times a week, making it an integral part of their routine.

Over the past two years since its creation, the Bright Little Library has evolved into a fixture in the neighbourhood, with a growing collection of books and a constant stream of visitors. Lauren, who has fully embraced her new career as an artist, finds joy in the fact that the library continues to thrive with no downsides. “There have been no downsides, only positives,” she said adamantly. “It’s such a simple way to give back and connect with others.”

For those considering starting their own Little Library, Lauren offers nothing but encouragement.“I cannot recommend it enough,” she says. “The experience has been enriching in so many ways, from the connections I’ve made to the joy of sharing books with others. It’s an amazing way to build community.”

Sarnia’s Little Libraries are much more than just book exchanges—they are community hubs that celebrate creativity, foster connections, and inspire kindness. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, taking the time to explore these special places offers a glimpse into the heart of what makes Sarnia a truly unique and welcoming community.
