Residents near Imperial Sarnia may notice elevated flaring and noise as a result of process units restarting, following the site’s 2023 maintenance turnaround, the company said this week. Emissions from the boiler stack may also be darker than normal.

“As units begin coming back online this week and next week, there will be periods of intermittent elevated flaring and noise that maybe heard off site,” a notice from Lambton Alerts stated.

“Imperial does not expect emissions from the refinery to exceed government guidelines. Testing during similar past events indicates emissions have not exceeded health related air quality standards during those occurrences.

“We appreciate the community’s patience as we work to safely restart our operations.”
