The City of Sarnia is once again inviting residents to get out and get active during the month of June for the ParticipACTION Community Challenge.
The national challenge encourages individuals and organizations to track their physical activity minutes during June, in the hopes of having their community named Canada’s most active — along with a $100,000 to to help promote physical activity.
“There are so many great ways to stay active and healthy at home in Sarnia, it could be as simple as weeding the garden, an afternoon hike, or a spirited bout of pickleball,” said community services coordinator Rebecca Warren. “The challenge is a great opportunity to highlight all the ways we can stay active and keep our community healthy and engaged.”
In 2022 — the first year Sarnia participated — the community tracked 3.9 million activity minutes in the month of June, ranking Sarnia as the fifth most active community out of 362 in Ontario.
Individual participants can use the ParticipACTION app to track their minutes, all of which will be attributed to Sarnia based on the postal code they input into the app. Organizations and groups can participate via the organization’s online portal.
To get the community moving, the City of Sarnia, will host a kick off event on June 1 at the Strangway Centre, featuring a help desk to assist residents in setting up the app on their device alongside select free fitness classes. Pre-registration for classes is required.
The City is also preparing a ‘Try it Tuesday’ series as part of the challenge, offering the opportunity to try a popular Strangway Centre class free of charge every Tuesday in June. Classes include Tai Chi, Funfit, Flow Yoga and Aging Backwards. Pre-registration for classes is required.
