Officials with the U.S. Coast Guard and PointSar Marine Rescue were able to help bring a group of divers safely to shore after their vessel took on water in Lake Huron over the weekend.
The incident occurred just north of Sarnia, said Jeremy Hennessy with the Canadian Coast Guard, who confirmed that both the U.S. Coast Guard, PointSar and Canadian Coast Guard Goderich base were called to assist with the rescue.
“US Coast Guard brought some of the people on board their vessel, and PointSAR escorted the vessel back to Sarnia,” Hennessy noted. The PoinSar Marine Rescue team is an auxiliary unit of the Canadian Coast Guard, serving the upper St. Clair River and lower Lake Huron.
“The Canadian Coast Guard vessel was stood down before arriving on scene. All were brought back to Sarnia safely.”
The Port Huron Times Herald reports that the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. when the divers’ boat began taking on water while they were scuba diving.
