Dear Editor,
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, (CBC) was established by Canadians, for Canadians, to counteract the American domination, of the free-world's airwaves. It favours no political party, and is funded by Canadian taxpayers. Without it, Canada's voice, would be silenced.
As Mr. Chekan stated, in his April 7th, letter, "Defund the CBC." CBC/Radio-Canada, serves all Canadians, in French, English, and eight Indigenous languages, across the country. However, there is much more value to the CBC, than simply being a reliable news source, for Canadians.
Through the years, both CBC radio, and CBC television, have provided a platform, for Canadian talent. Singers, authors, comedians, musicians, speakers, journalists, and programs, got their start on CBC, which made it possible, for them to establish international careers. Successes, like Anne Murray, Schitt's Creek, and many others, wouldn't have stood a chance in the USA, without first gaining popularity, in Canada.
Does anyone know, why Pierre Poilievre has this long-standing obsession, to defund the CBC? Did they, once, deny him employment? Is someone he hates, an employee? Is he and ex-employee? Could it possibly be, that he just doesn't think Canadians deserve to have a trusted news source?
In this age of misinformation, disinformation, threats, outright lies, character assassinations, hate speech, outside interference, social media influence, and tariffs, Canadians need to find the truth, more than ever before. We have a right to factual information, about anything which affects Canadians. The CBC gives us the unvarnished truth. It's Canadians, presenting Canada with the facts. Does that sound like anything, which needs to be stopped?
Personally, I don't want journalistic "spin" on an issue, nor a TV station, that's "for profit" and open to outside influence. I just want factual information, from a trusted, Canadian source. The CBC, provides that.
