Landmark Village retirement community recently celebrated Canada Day with an uplifting performance by their own spirited choir, the “Merry Music Makers.”

This vibrant group, composed of residents who share a profound love for singing, delivered a heartwarming Canada Day program that resonated deeply with the audience. Their repertoire included 10 songs, each representing the essence and spirit of Canada, and featured an original composition by choir member Ernestine Perkins.

Perkins’ song, "It’s Canada," holds a special place in the choir's repertoire. Written for Canada’s 150th birthday celebration, this song was first performed in Ottawa on the historic day itself, adding a layer of national pride and personal achievement to the performance. Perkins said, “I was shocked when they picked it!” Her lyrics capture the beauty, diversity, and unity of Canada, making it a perfect fit for the occasion.

The musical director for the Merry Music Makers' Canada Day program was David Crosbie, a talented musician and member of an all-male a cappella singing group based in Sarnia. Under Crosbie's expert guidance, the choir delivered a polished and emotive performance. His experience and passion for music were evident in the seamless harmony and enthusiasm displayed by the group.

The story of the Merry Music Makers began a few months ago. Carolyn Sperling, one of the founding members, shared how it all started. Sperling and three other residents at Landmark Village discovered their shared passion for singing and began to gather informally. When asked how the group has impacted her, Sperling explained that, “it has allowed me time to help people and chat with them.” Their joyful sessions soon attracted the attention of other residents, and with the support and encouragement of Landmark Village’s director, Tamara Milligan, the group quickly grew in size and ambition.

What began as a quartet has blossomed into a choir of 35 members, ranging in age from 70 to 99. The ensemble includes not only singers but also musicians who play the ukulele, guitar, and even the Irish Bodhran drum, adding a rich and diverse musical texture to their performances.

While music is at the heart of the Merry Music Makers, the group’s purpose extends far beyond singing. Sperling explained that the weekly meetings are as much about friendship and camaraderie as they are about music. For many members, the choir provides a sense of community and belonging that enriches their lives.

The Merry Music Makers take a collaborative approach to selecting their repertoire.

Each member has a voice in choosing the songs they perform, ensuring that the music resonates with the group as a whole. For their Canada Day program, the selections were carefully chosen to reflect the diverse cultural heritage of Canada. The program celebrated the rich tapestry of Canadian music.

One of the highlights of the performance was, of course, Perkins’ 'It’s Canada.' The song’s poignant lyrics and uplifting melody captivated the audience, evoking a strong sense of national pride. Other notable performances included renditions of classic Canadian songs that had everyone tapping their feet and singing along.

The impact of the Merry Music Makers extends beyond the walls of Landmark Village. Their performances bring joy and entertainment to the residents, staff, and visitors, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.

As the Merry Music Makers look to the future, they are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. The group plans to continue their weekly rehearsals and is already brainstorming ideas for their next performance.

The Canada Day performance by Landmark Village’s Merry Music Makers was more than just a celebration of the nation’s birthday; it was a celebration of community, friendship, and the transformative power of music. Through their songs, the choir members not only honoured Canada’s heritage but also demonstrated the joy and fulfillment that comes from coming together to create something beautiful.

As they continue to grow and evolve, the Merry Music Makers are sure to inspire and uplift all who have the pleasure of hearing their songs.
