Residents at Vision Long Term Care and Rest Home were treated to a Wild West-themed event this month, as part of the home’s Fun Fest celebration hosted by the Vision Family Council.
The event helped mark Family Councils Ontario Week — to raise awareness about how Family Councils are working to improve the quality of live and care in long-term care.
“Our main purpose is to improve the quality of life of the residents and to give families and friends a forum for sharing their experiences, learnings and exchanging information,” said Debbie Krukowski, chair of the Vision Family Council. “We work with family members and the home to identify and resolve issues that affect residents’ quality of life.”
The group provides opportunities for members to participate in education, advocacy for their loved ones, and opportunities to improve the care and services provided for all residents living at Vision, Krukowski explained.
“One example of this is our ‘Ask Me’ Café,” she said. “In its trial, we have invited new family members to sit and have a coffee or tea in an informal setting to answer any questions they may have.”
The Fun Fest included a a full-day of activities for the residents.
“The splish-splash pool, loaded with 'fish' gave everyone the opportunity to land a big one,” said Krukowski. “And in the Café, each cohort of the nursing home and the rest home displayed their Vision family tree.
"Beverages and one of many amazing themed cookies, donated by the BAD Bakery, were enjoyed by residents, family, staff and volunteers.”
