Northern scores big with holiday food drive

Free-throw competition helps boost donations for Inn of the Good Shepherd

With Christmas approaching and many in our community in need of food, Northern Collegiate’s Leadership Class and Student Council recently hosted a canned food drive, with donations going to The Inn Of The Good Shepherd in Sarnia.

Rates of the homelessness in Ontario have increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the holidays are a difficult time for so many — trying to stay warm or even just needing a hot meal.

The students set a goal and succeeded in collecting 7,500 cans in total, and accepted cash donations as well ($1= 2 cans) earning about $3,500.

To help raise awareness, they hosted a free-throw competition as well; in order to participate, every period ‘A’ class was challenged to bring at least 50 cans, or the equivalent in cash.

The free throw competition was held during the week of December 4-8.

The top three classes — Mr. Leverre, Mrs. Maczko, and Mr. Westlake’s — earned a pizza party.
