Lambton County Library Highlights Media Literacy During Ontario Public Library Week

Lambton County Library is shining a light on media literacy during this year’s Ontario Public Library Week, running from October 20 – 26, 2024.

In today’s digital age, flooded with Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated content, it is more important than ever before to have the skills needed to critically evaluate what people read, see, and hear, particularly online.

Media Smarts defines media literacy as: “the ability to critically, effectively and responsibly access, use, understand and engage with media of all kinds.” 

Libraries, as trusted sources of information, play an important role in combating misinformation (incorrect or misleading information), disinformation (false information intended to deceive), and malinformation (exaggerated information that misleads) and help people develop the critical thinking skills needed to confidently navigate the digital landscape.  

During Ontario Public Library Week, Lambton County Library is offering free media literacy programs to help people of all ages develop critical thinking skills for the digital age. Register online at lclibrary.ca or by calling your local library to reserve your spot! Here’s a look at the lineup: 

  • Introduction to Digital Citizenship: Learn what it means to be a responsible digital citizen and how to navigate the online world with confidence.
    • Clearwater Library: Saturday, October 19, 2024, 12:30pm - 1:30pm
    • Bright’s Grove Library: Tuesday, October 22, 2024, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
       
  • Beginner's Guide to A.I.: Dive into the basics of artificial intelligence and explore its real-world applications in an accessible, beginner-friendly presentation.
    • Alvinston Library: Monday, October 21, 2024, 2:00pm - 3:00pm
    • Petrolia Library: Tuesday, October 22, 2024, 1:00pm - 2:00pm
       
  • Tracking your Digital Footprint: Explore how your digital footprint is created and learn strategies to protect your personal information online.
    • Watford Library: Wednesday, October 23, 2024, 4:00pm - 5:00pm
    • Forest Library: Thursday, October 24, 2024, 5:00pm - 6:00pm
       
  • How to Spot Fake News: In an age of information overload, learn tips and tricks to identify misinformation and become a confident fact-checker.
    • Sarnia Library: Wednesday, October 23, 2024, 6:00pm - 7:00pm
       
  • Dr. Joel Armstrong: Explore the history, concerns, and future trends of generative AI tools. Dive deeper into the world of AI with a Q&A session with Dr. Armstrong.
    • Sarnia Library Theatre: Friday, October 25, 6:00-7:30 p.m.

In addition to programs, Lambton County Library offers free, year-round access to the following resources that can help anyone seeking out information:
