The U13 Valhalla Girls Basketball team, representing Northern Collegiate Institute & Vocational School, recently had the unique opportunity to meet with the Lambton Lions Women’s Basketball team in a mentorship event at Lambton College. The gathering went beyond basketball, providing valuable lessons in teamwork, resilience, and balancing life as an athlete.
“The goal was to create a positive, supportive environment where younger players can learn from their role models,” said Karen Hatch, team manager of the U13 Valhalla Vikings. “It also gave the older athletes the chance to develop leadership skills, give back to the sport, and inspire the next generation of athletes.”
During the Lions’ practice, the U13 players observed techniques, game strategies, and the hard work it takes to succeed at the collegiate level. “The feedback from our girls was fantastic—they absolutely loved it! Don’t forget, we have watched this team defend the den and win OCAA gold. These women are their heroes!” Hatch said.
After practice, the young athletes had the chance to connect with the Lions off the court. They asked questions about balancing school, sports, and relationships while living away from home and managing part-time jobs. “The big takeaway was that these women are not only accomplished athletes but also working towards diplomas, degrees, living away from home, and holding down part-time jobs—truly inspirational and motivational,” Hatch added.
“Our hope is that this night was a powerful reminder of the importance of both on-court skills and off-court relationships,” said Hatch. “This mentorship showed that teamwork, trust, and unity are the keys to success—not just in sports, but in life.”
The event underscored the impact of mentorship in sports, highlighting how athletes at every level can inspire one another and build a stronger sense of community.
