Residents are being reminded to ‘trust their instincts’ and report any crimes to police, after a suspicious vehicle call led to a weapons-related arrest, Friday.

Sarnia Police officers were called around 12 noon on Dec. 29, to a suspicious vehicle parked on the grass outside of an apartment complex on Afton Drive.

“As officers arrived on scene and approached the vehicle, a male exited the car and became confrontational with police,” a news release stated. “The male continued to reach back inside the driver’s side of the vehicle.”

A female passenger was also sitting inside the vehicle.

“As officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a handgun located between the driver’s side and the centre console,” police added.

“Both individuals in the motor vehicle were arrested. A subsequent search of the vehicle located a large kitchen knife hidden beneath the steering column of the vehicle.”

The weapon was determined to be a pellet gun.

Both individuals, age 33 and 28, have been charged with one count each of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

“Community Safety is a shared responsibility,” police added. "The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) presents these guidelines that will help you to protect your and your family, help reduce crime, and in maintaining a more secure and safer environment:

  • Trust your instincts.
  • When in public, always beware of your surroundings. Be mindful of persons and or vehicles loitering or acting suspiciously.
  • Remember to report any crimes or serious activities you experience and/or witness.”
