On December 4th, the SPS announced the formalization of another small project to address one (of many) property crime challenges in the City of Sarnia. This project focused on a multi-stage approach to recover stolen shopping carts, which are highly visible in some areas of our community.
This initiative is another example of the SPS working to address multiple community concerns around property crimes and complex social disorder issues. Every interaction the police have, is an opportunity to encourage some of our high risk individuals to access available services including shelters, addiction support, or other paths that can address some of their underlying challenges.
Property crimes, including thefts, are a high priority for residents of Sarnia. Stolen shopping carts, are only one piece of a larger crime problem that spans different demographics and individual circumstances.
Stolen shopping carts happen to be a very visible representation of the challenges in our community. This year alone, approximately 650 carts were stolen from area retailers. The costs associated with the theft and repair of these items is passed onto the consumer (our residents) in the form yet more increased costs.
This particular initiative is being done with a phased approach that includes education and referral to support services. Offenders will be encouraged to return these stolen items and (hopefully) mitigate the level of thefts we have been experiencing. With any criminal investigation, the circumstances within each interaction are considered prior to any enforcement action being taken.
The Sarnia Police have been working with local retailers and victims to return their property when recovered. This photo, taken Aug 1, 2024, depicts stolen carts and a stolen wheelbarrow recovered from Rainbow Park. These were returned to their owners.
"There are several property crime related initiatives underway and in development within the Sarnia Police Service. This latest addition is only one aspect of a much larger expanse of effort in this crime category. The stolen shopping cart is a visible reminder of the work that needs to be done in our community when attempting to alleviate the many social and crime related concerns our residents experience every day."
